Dr. Michelle Nicolleti
Assistant Professor, MSN Program Director
Degrees Held:
ADN, McLennan Community College 1980
MSN, University of Texas, Arlington 1997
FNP Baylor University 2005
DNP Wilkes University 2017
Career Highlights:
I think nursing gives individuals such a wide range of opportunities. I enjoyed nursing in the ICU and treating the most critical patients. After I became an FNP, I adjusted from taking care of the most critical patients to improving the quality of life of individuals by instituting health promotion and prevention interventions in my treatment plans. As a nurse educator, watching the "light bulb" turn on when a student understands a concept is great feeling that I have enjoyed as much as working at the bedside or clinic.
In which online program do you teach?
MSN
In what ways do you connect with online students?
Connecting with online students is more challenging than students in the traditional classroom. I feel that being engaged with students by actively participating in discussion questions, providing video lectures or voice over powerpoints allows the student to get to know me as a person, not just an online faceless entity.
What do you want your students to take away from class?
I want them to not just learn what is in the textbook, but gain the ability to apply it to real life situations
Why did you start teaching?
I have a passion for nursing and wanted to pass it on to the next genertion of nurses and nurse practitioners.
What advice would you give to your online students?
Practice time management: Schedule time for studying, homework and quiz/test. Most online students are working and have families making sure you schedule time for school requirements is very improtant to be successful, but also schedule time for family/friends and self-care.
What qualities make someone successful in the field in which you teach?
Having a passion and love for nursing and wanting to care for others. I feel as a nurse you must have the knowledge to take care of your patients, but also compassion and empathy for them. Nurses must be life long learners and teaching gives me the opportunity to continue to expand my knowledge, and hopefully impart knowledge to my students while showing them compassion and empathy.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
Of course, The Bible is at the top of my list!
What do you do when you need a laugh?
Either visit or FaceTime my grandchildren. They are still young enough not to have a filter and they make me laugh and loved at the same time.
Tell us a story.
I married my high school sweetheart one month after my high school graduation. We have been married for over 45 years. We were nontraditional first generation college students, I completed my DNP and he has a Master's in Criminal Justice. While completing school we worked fulltime and raised 3 amazing children. I feel like I can relate to my online working students with many different obligations and help them be successful.
